Why Do A Commission?

  • Anchor a Moment in Time

Mark a feeling, energy, or chapter you don’t want to lose.

Whether it's joy, grief, hope, or transformation, a commissioned piece lets you distill that feeling into something visual, lasting, and deeply personal.

  • Colors That Speak Your Soul

Pick the palette, set the tone, and let it reflect your inner world.

Mood, movement, and color come together in a way that’s entirely yours. Whether it’s soft and serene or bold and electric, the colors you choose become a reminder of your truth.

  • A Living Reminder

Your piece becomes something to return to.

It grows with you. It becomes an anchor you can revisit when you want to reconnect with a version of yourself, a shift you experienced, or the energy you want to carry forward.

How A Commission Works

Lets chat!

Discovery Call

We begin with a quick call to explore what you're looking for and whether a commission is the right fit. If so, we’ll schedule a second call to go deeper.

I'll ask you to reflect on an energy, emotion, or chapter of your life you want embodied in the piece. Feel free to bring any images that help you tell the story — they won’t be copied, just used as reference to feel the tone.

You’re also welcome to share color ideas or palettes. I work intuitively, but this is where we’ll align on the overall mood and aura.

After Your Drawing Is Complete

Payment

The remaining half of the payment is due before the drawing is shipped out.

Preparing For Shipment

All drawings are sprayed with archival fixative. This sets the materials so no smudging or fading occurs. The drawing is dried properly before packing up to ship.

Shipping Your Drawing

The size of the drawing determines how it will be packaged to ship.

If the drawing is 38" x 58" or smaller, it will be shipped using a secure flat box. These boxes are lined with plastic so the drawing will never get punctured. I will be sending a return slip along with the box, or they can be kept for a fee.

If the drawing is large and oversized. it will be rolled up and shipped with an archival shipping tube.

All shipments are with UPS or FedEx (depending on the dimension), sent with standard shipping. If you like it expedited please feel free to let me know for an extra fee.

The Intuitive Process

My drawings are unplanned, intuitive responses to emotions and life. They are never pre-planned.

All of my work is done on paper. I prefer using a smooth thick watercolor paper.

Gentle Mapping

I start by using the colors we discussed. I always start with the lighter colors first. My hand move lightly across the page, carving out its own space.

Textured Expression

The piece grows layer by layer; lines get bolder, textures build, shapes start to emerge. It’s all about staying present and letting the drawing become what it wants to be.

Growing The Drawing

As the drawing grows, I move with it. I use sandpaper and erasers to move and shift the weight of the lines.

Finding Balance

I move the paper with me. It gets flipped and rotated in different directions to find the best composition. Each rotation helps me see something new.

The Result

Once the color and line feel settled, its done! I take it off the wall and begin spraying the drawing with archival fixative. This sets the materials and keeps it from fading.

FAQs

What carrier do you use to ship drawings?

If the packaged drawing is under 100" in total, I ship with UPS. Anything above that size I need to ship with FedEx.

I always ship ground. If you do want faster shipping that will be an extra cost to the shipping cost.

I am not sure how to frame a drawing. Could you help me with recommendations?

Of course! We can look at where this drawing is going and the color scheme of the room. Then I can recommend some options.

What is the minimum price for a commission?

The minimum amount for a commission drawing is $3000.

How much input will i have, and when?

Once you decide that a commission is something you want to invest in, we book a call to go over size, color and what is driving your inspiration for this call. This call is all about what you want to get out of this drawing.

During the process, I will send you images and videos of the process. Once I start the drawing there is no giving direction, the lines and color direct themselves. Please keep in mind that the drawing will make many shifts in direction, which dont always determine the final result.

WHAT MATERIALS DO YOU USE FOR ART COMMISSIONS, AND DO I HAVE ANY INPUT?

The materials I use are pencils, colored pencils, soft and oil pastels. I dont use any materials that are toxic to the environment or myself. I am happy to purchase colors in any of these materials that I dont have for your commission!

What happens if i dont like it?

When a custom piece leaves my studio, the drawing is yours. There are no returns or refunds.

During the process I am more than happy to keep you informed of how the drawing is going. I am always happy to change colors if you feel like something is missing.

I'm ready lets do this! How do i start again?

Fantastic!

About Jalena

Jalena Hay's process is immediate, embodied, and unrepeatable: each piece emerges from a single moment of presence, a real-time response to memory, sensation, and inner atmosphere.

Her work lives in the in-between: between abstraction and representation, between what is seen and what is deeply felt. Every mark is a pulse of presence; nothing is pre-planned. The result is a body of work that invites contemplation, not just consumption.

Color and line are not used merely for form, but as a felt language, a way of resonating with the nervous system. Rather than explain, her compositions resonate, vibrating with quiet energy and inviting repeated, deeper encounters.
