Why I Created This Journal

After I gave birth to my son, I thought I was suppose to have a burst of creativity, having been through this life changing experience. I had the opposite, where everything felt so hard. Then another life changing experience happened during the height of Covid, I was diagnosed with cancer. I went through surgery and treatment during the pandemic. While recovering at home I thought, ok is NOW the time where my life changing events inspire me? I had the opposite effect where drawing felt too overwhelming. I didn't know how to process this, let alone draw it.

After a few years, I wanted to come back to my practice. I started with some small prompts and exercises that I share in this journal. These helped me to get back into the habit of making, and helped me to start being creative with no pressure. The more I allowed myself to create, the more I got excited about drawing. I am so thrilled to share these prompts with you and help you get your creativity back, wherever you are in your journey.

Meet Jalena Hay

Jalena Hay creates unrepeatable works that emerge from presence - immediate, embodied, and intuitive.

Using pastel and pencil, she builds layered, intricate compositions that balance control and chaos, gesture and stillness. Each drawing is a real-time response to memory and sensation—nothing pre-planned, every mark a moment of awareness.

Born in California and based in Brooklyn NY, Jalena's work has been shown in galleries across New York and just attended the Vermont Studio Center Residency.

What Collectors Are Saying

"Jalena's drawings embody the energy and honesty of abstract drawing. Owning a piece of her art in my home inspires my life and art practice daily! It connects me with such force of life, and the ether that helps us breathe, move and beat."

Thomas

"I have such a deep connection to the work. The color feels more than surface level, it hits me in an emotional way. The fact that all of these drawings are done in the moment really blows me away!"

James

"Every mark vibrates with presence. Jalena's work is wonderfully intuitive."
